Christian Translator of Quran Cites Promotion of Muslim-Christian Relations as His Aim
Professor Hartmut Bobzin, translator of the Holy Quran into German says his main aim has been promotion of relations between Christians and Muslims.
Speaking during a visit to IQNA’s pavilion at the 19th International Holy Quran Exhibition, Professor Bobzin said, “As a religious expert, I have always been in contact with the Muslim community. Having this background, I rendered the Quran into German so that German speaking people can get more familiar with the Quran.”
Referring to the difficulties and complexities in translating religious texts, he said rendering such texts requires extensive research as well as mastery over the source and target languages.
Professor Bobzin noted that there are some words in the source languages which can not be directly translated into the target language.
He added that he studied many sources related to linguistics before embarking on translation of Muslims’ Holy Book.
Professor Bobzin’s rendering includes translation of some commentaries on the verses of the Quran by Quran interpreters.
Professor Hartmut Bobzin is a German Islamologist and lecturer at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He spent ten years, from 2000 to 2010, to complete the work. He has benefited from the works of the previous scholars and orientalists of the Erlangen-Nuremberg University.
