| Translating Quran Needs a Collection of Competencies |
| -- Embarking on translation of the Holy Quran not only requires mastering source and target languages, but also calls for certain fields of knowledge and abilities. This is according to an Iranian scholar, Farugh Safizadeh, who holds PhD degrees in Persian language and literature from Tehran University and Ancient philosophy and languages from an Indian University. He is also a translator of the holy Quran into Persian. Having deep knowledge and information in relation to Quran exegesis is an essential factor for translating the Quran, he says, noting that being fully acquainted with this branch of knowledge helps the translator render Quranic verses better from the semantic point of view. The specialist in ancient languages numbers certain elements to be taken into consideration in this regard as he believes that jurisprudence, history, and Islamic decrees, occupy an undeniable position in what he calls a “complex matter”. Expert of philosophy goes on to mention a number of pretty modern disciplines including linguistics, sociology, psychology, philology, etc. when it comes to the question of the Holy Quran translation. “No translated versions of the Quran is perfect since it is impossible to totally render the Word of the Creator into any language, but one thing is clear: the more one is devoted to the task, the better the result will be.” Putting emphasis on comparative study of Quran translations, Safizadeh affirms that such an activity leads the translator to identify one’s strong points and weaknesses, helping him or her to better move forward. 773182 |
