Versified Translation of the Quran
-- Versified translation of the Holy Quran into foreign languages such as English runs the risk of sacrificing the content in favor of the form, according to a prominent Iranian translator.
Farideh Mahdavi Damghani, a high profile translator of literary as well as religious works and masterpieces from several European languages, was speaking about prose and poetic versions of the Holy Quran into English.
Both types of translation can be fruitful depending on how consciously enthusiastic a translator is in his or her commitment to translating “the most precious book of the world’s history”.
However, a poetic translation of the sacred Scripture is very difficult to achieve, if not impossible, she noted, explaining that this kind of translation could result in semantic detour. “In this case, versified rendering of the Holy Quran would bring about serious consequences.”
Those willing to engage in translation of the Noble Quran need to be very careful in such a way that no points can be added or reduced out of subjectivity, the translator of the Quran stressed, calling on her fellow workers to spare no efforts in their professional activity in order to create a reliable source of the Quran in living languages, in particular English.
Mahdavi Damghani went on to say that there are few Iranian translators embarking on the delicate and challenging task of translating the Quran and that a lot of work is needed to reach a desirable point in this regard.
She went on to say that there is a long way to go when it comes to the question of Quran translation involving quantitative as well as qualitative perspectives.
